Many people are interested in becoming witches but have no clue where to start. Outlined below are steps you can take on your journey to becoming a witch! You will notice that nothing is mentioned about joining a coven or a group until the very last thing to do. This is because you should start out as a solitary witch so you can teach yourself what feels right and comfortable to you. Once you know yourself as a witch, then you can find others that you are comfortable being with.
Step One - Find your own Path
Read and study anything you can find that will tell you more about the beliefs of witchcraft. It is through learning the basic beliefs that you can decide if this is the right path for you. Keep in mind that witchcraft is nature based, so go outside and experience nature. Take a hike, go camping, and watch birds and animals in nature. Learn how they fit into the big picture. Learn all you can about the Earth and Sky which are the embodiments of the God and Goddess.
Step Two - Define Your Path
In a notebook or journal write down the reasons you want to be a witch. What it means to you. Also note any fears you have, how you visualize the God and Goddess, and what the Divine means to you personally. There are no right or wrong answers here, and no one else should read this but you. This is how you can define the path you want to take on your journey.
Step Three - Learn about Magic
Magic is not to be trifled with. It is not about changing the natural order of things, it's about using the energy found in the universe and yourself to achieve your desired result. Before you begin dabbling in magic, you have to remember that there are ethics involved. You are responsible for your own actions, and if you do harm to anyone or anything you will face the consequences.
You need to learn about magic rituals such as how to cast a circle, and how to use energy in your magic. You need to know how the different phases of the moon affect not only magic, but how it affects you physically and emotionally.
Step Four - Practice Focusing
Learn how to meditate and visualize to increase your ability to concentrate and focus. Being able to concentrate and focus for a period of time can increase the power of spells. It is vital that you learn how to draw strength from within and from nature, including the sun, moon, and stars.
Step Five - Begin doing some simple spells.
Either find or write some simple spells to use. Keep in mind that the main rule of witchcraft is: "First do no harm." So take care that your spells cannot harm another living creature. Intent is everything. Make sure your intent is pure and divine in nature. Don't ever cast out of a negative emotion such as jealousy, anger, envy, or revenge.
Step Six - Networking
It is generally suggested that you should remain a solitary witch for at least a year or more. This will give you time to study, research, and become comfortable with your new path. Once you are comfortable and confident, then you may want to seek out others who share your same interests and with whom you feel safe and comfortable with. Many witches choose to be solitary witches their whole lives, but have a circle of friends who share their common interests.
Learning the Craft requires constant learning and growing on your part. There is always something to learn and new ways to grow not only as a witch, but as a person.
So good luck on your journey and Blessed Be.
